"Each generation of the church in each setting has the responsibility of communicating the gospel in understandable terms, considering the language and thought-forms of that setting." - Francis Schaeffer
As the world embraces the smartphone, the Body of Christ has before it a grand new opportunity ---and challenge--- to leverage that technology to deliver the Good News of Jesus Christ to every person of every tribe, tongue and nation. An initial step in this process is determining how indigenous people are using their cell phones, how they would like to use their cell phones for Scripture engagement, and to then equip people to create content that piques their people's interest for interacting with Scripture. This process involves:
- Researching the audience
- Leadership development
- Collaborative strategy development and planning
- Content creation
- Implement an effective distribution strategy
Our team has been collaborating with partners in Latin America to carry out the research stage by surveying indigenous youth and young adults. This is a generation that are "digital natives" growing up in a world where cell phones have always existed in their life times. Surveying this group helps us measure their current use of cell phones as well as attitudes which are indicative of how they will be likely to use cell phones in the future.
The next stage is to work with church leaders to enable them to understand how they can potentially leverage this technology. We have been partnering with indigenous ministries as they seek to accomplish this with pastors in their region.
When church leaders understand how and why youth and young adults are engaged with their phones, and how this technology can be utilized in so many ways for ministry and outreach, the next stage is for churches in a given language area to work together to build strategies and plans.
The final stages ---content creation, implementation and distribution--- involve enabling speakers of indigenous languages to gain the skills they need to venture into this rapidly growing area. Our team is available to help facilitate workshops and online training for this in 2017.
